Shingi Matemera was born on June 1, 1982, in Zimbabwe. He is a highly talented abstract artist who began woodcarving at the age of 6 at the Tengenenge Gallery in Guruve. His father, Bernard Matemera, one of the pioneers of Shona art, lived there. Shingirai drew his main inspiration from his work at Tengenenge. Unlike his father’s works, many of his sculptures are abstract and feature his own distinctive style. He is capable of working with various media but has specialized primarily in serpentine.
