The exceptionally talented and prolific artist Edward Chiwawa was part of the group of Shona sculptors who had already gained significant international recognition by the end of the 20th century. This group is known as the “first generation” of Shona sculptors.

Edward Chiwawa and his wife Shirley had thirteen children and over forty grandchildren.

Edward Chiwawa was born at a time when births were not yet officially documented. During our last visit to him, he himself reconstructed his year of birth - quite credibly - as 1916! Despite his advanced age, he was still very active until shortly before his death.
His timeless works will outlive him.
