The extraordinarily talented and productive artist Edward Chiwawa belonged to the group of Shona sculptors who achieved great international recognition at the end of the 20th century. These are the so-called "first generation" of Shona sculptors.

Edward Chiwawa and his wife Shirley had thirteen children and over forty grandchildren.

Edward Chiwawa was born at a time when births were not yet officially documented. During our last visit to him, he himself reconstructed his year of birth - quite credibly - as 1916! Despite his advanced age, he was still very active until shortly before his death.
His timeless works will outlive him.
