He was born in Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe, in 1976 and began sculpting as a young boy, inspired by his mother Rachel Ndandarika.
In 1996, Leo Berekayi came to Chapungu to help his mother and in 2000 he was invited to the Chapungu Residency Program.
He likes to depict everyday life in Zimbabwe in his sculptures, for example the everyday work of women, such as fetching firewood. He also depicts situations that refer to the seriousness of times that are not always easy - for example, a pensive person with their chin in their hand.
Leo Berekayi prefers to work with black springstone and also experiments with very hard stones such as agate and rose quartz.
