Cosmos Muchenje

Cosmos Muchenje was born in 1960 in the village of Muchenje in the Msana district near Bindura in northern Zimbabwe. He began painting in Harare when he was just ten years old. Later, he attended the Canon Paterson Art Center and the Peter Birch School of Art in Harare, focusing primarily on painting at the time. He cites John Takawira and Edward Chiwawa as his early role models in sculpture.

He has been selling his works since 1981. He began his career as a sculptor working with Verdit; today he works with many types of stone, primarily black opal and serpentine. He also paints landscapes and performs gospel music.
